The Chapel of Apparitions is the very heart of the pilgrimage, where a marble statue of the Virgin Mary marks the spot where the apparitions took place. The Basilica was consecrated in 1953 and includes 15 altars, one for each of the Mysteries of the Rosary. Just in front of the Basilica is the Recint. This colonnade incorporates statues of Portuguese saints in its architecture. The Via Sacre, or Holy Way, is an outdoor path, which includes 15 chapels – the first 14 for the Stations of the Cross and the last in commemoration of the Resurrection.
