Vila Real is a district, municipality and a town in the northern region of Portugal. The district is located in between the spectacular gorges of the Cabril and Corgo Rivers and is overlooked by the masses of the Alvão and Marão mountains. Quite an interesting iron bridge crosses the Corgo linking the old to the new township. The Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro has put this area onto the map because of its well sought after courses in winemaking and forestry.
Some of the noteworthy attractions of the area in and around the district of Vila Real are Vila Nova de Vale da Cõa which boasts the world’s largest collection of open-air Stone Age drawings estimated to be from about 20,000 years ago. Just to the north is the town of Penedono, with its impressive castle that existed before 960 AD. To the south is the Spa of Termas das Caldas de Moledo and to the south-west is yet another Spa, called Caldas de Arego. The now world famous Casa Mateus, an aristocratic country manor from the early 18th Century 3 Km is to the northeast. The casa’s façade is which appears on the label of the internationally famous Rose wine.
