Chaves is a city in northern Portugal, not far from that country' s northernmost border with Spain. The town, currently populated by about 44,500 permanent residents, has been prominent since Roman times. Its prominence has mostly been as a military site. The Romans used the town as a stronghold for their soldiers. Later, Christian civilizations used the town for similar purposes, building not one but two separate fortresses within the city's boundaries. As Chaves is located in the middle of an abundant plain, the residents of Chaves have historically relied on farming to survive. This tradition continues today. The town also boasts 73-degree (Celsius) hot springs, which have attracted visitors in search of physical rejuvenation since antiquity.
