Kampa Island

In the Little Quarter of Prague, you can find a little piece of peace and quiet. There are quiet places to stroll, a contemporary art gallery, the ruins of water mille and fully restored water wheel. This is Kampa Island. It sits on a small piece of turf formed by a small arm of the Vltana River, the Devil’s Stream.

In the Middle Ages, you would not have a single home on the island. Women washed their clothing and bleached fine linen, here. Gardens grew in profusion. Mills used water to power their wheels. In the 17th century, pottery markets sprung up on the island. The houses on the main square date from this period. Wander the quiet streets. Sit in a café, a pub or a park. Follow along Hroznová Lane to the bridge. Here you can see the remains of one of the mighty water wheels. You can also visit Grand Prior’s Mill. There you can see a restored millwheel.
