There are two structures in Prague referred to as the Powder Tower. One is in the Hrad, the other part of the Old Town. The Powder Tower in the Old Town is, actually, a Gate. It was once part of the system of defense. It was a cog in the fortification structure.
Old Town Powder Tower is from 1475. It stands 138 meters tall (48 feet).It is rich in sculptural detail. There is a statue of King Přmysl Otaker II and under it a bawdy relief. The Tower marks the start of the Royal Route – the journey from the town to St. Vitus Cathedral. A prince followed this route on his way to be crowned. You could also leave this gate and head to Kutná Hora. From the 18th century onwards, however, the Tower became obsolete. It evolved into a storage bin for gunpowder. In the 20th century, it was also a meeting place for Kafka and Max Brand.
