Prague Zoo

Many visitors to Prague are so tied up seeing the numerous sites, wonderful palaces and historical places of interest that they never think to visit the extensive Prague Zoo – and that is a shame! Granted another day of walking the hilly and large Zoo will be a workout, but the experience of Prague Zoo, all but forgotten by most of the city guides is one that will stay with you for a long time. The Zoo is right by the Vltava River, in Prague's fancy Troja district and half of the Zoo is actually in a flood plain – in fact recent floods that swamped the lower half of the park actually caused the death of Kadira the elephant and were big news in Prague and around the world. The good news though is that the tragedy seems to have galvanized public support for the Zoo - attendance is up, benefit concerts have been held and a tax break is making its way through parliament to aid in reconstruction and improvements that are ongoing. Before the flood, Prague Zoo was something of a work in progress, and wholesale improvements to the park have been delayed but the exhibits are good and getting better, and anywhere that offers moose-stroking and discounted beer is worth a visit!
