New Town of Prague

The carefully planned New Town was founded by Charles IV in 1348, and features at its heart Wenceslas Square. It is an easy walk from Old Town or by public transportation from anywhere else. Twice as large as Old Town when created it was mainly inhabited by tradesmen and craftsmen. During the late19th century its outer fortification were demolished and subsequently redeveloped to its present modern outlook. 600 years ago New Town was meant to serve as Prague's main commercial district, a goal which it can still be said to achieve today. Numerous businesses, hotels and banks are located in New Town, as well as department stores, boutiques, and a several shopping malls. New Town also has several theatres, movie theatres, museums, and an opera house. Wenceslas Square is the bustling center of Nové mìsto and the district stretches northeast and southwest of it towards the river. Some other squares are Karlovo námìstí, Senovážné námìstí, and Námìstí republiky. The two boulevards that you will not want to miss are Národní and Na pøíkopì, both separating the New Town from the Old Town. All three lines of the metro run through Nové mìsto: line A between Mùstek and Muzeum, line B between Karlovo námìstí and Florenc, and line C between I. P. Pavlova and Florenc.
