Old Town Square in Prague

Step into the Old Town Square and you are astounded by the breathtaking beauty of one of the most magnificent historical sights of Europe. Ancient buildings and towering churches echo volumes on the dramatic history of Prague. Here you can see many images straight from books about Prague. The Old Town Square sits amongst a maze of narrow cobbled streets, located between Vltava River and Wenceslas Square. The sights most worth visiting in the Old Town Square are the Church of Our Lady before Tyn, the Astronomical Clock & Old Town Hall Tower and the amazing St. Nicolas Church. At the centre is the Jan Hus statue, erected to mark the 500th anniversary of the reformer's death. The square is the centre stage for constant hum of activity, day and night, and has a long history of hosting the city's defining moments. Be it the execution of preacher J. Zelivsky in 1422 or the attacks on soviet tanks with Molotov cocktails in 1968. Above the square, but half-hidden behind a row of houses, is the fairy-turreted Tyn Church. Today the Square is also frequented for political speeches, Christmas celebrations and large public gatherings. To add serenity to the place, the square and surrounding streets are pedestrian zones. In summers, the terraces are full to the top with tourists who relax and revel in the beauty of remarkable medieval buildings around.
