Jewish Town Hall

On Maslova Street, in the Jewish Quarter of Prague, stands a pink and white building. This is the Žldovská radnice or Jewish Town Hall. It, like so many other buildings in this quarter, owes its existence to a former Mayor, Mordecai Maisel. Today, it stands as a monument to his efforts and to a bygone era. On a more pragmatic and functional level, it is also the home to the Council of Jewish Religious Communities in the Czech Republic.

The building was under construction from 1570 to 1577. During the years, two fires (1689 and 1759) altered the structure. In 1763, the building gained a late Baroque facade. In 1908, the last alterations resulted in the immediate appearance. It stands as Baroque-style building with a small wooden clock tower on its green steeple. The clock is an unusual one. Its hands move anti-clockwise in accordance with the Hebraic characters and the telling of time.
