Mucha Museum in Prague

The very first Museum to be dedicated to the life and work of the world-acclaimed Czech ART NOUVEAU artist Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939). Mucha is perhaps most widely known for the posters he executed for Sarah Bernhardt, but this beautiful building housed in the Baroque Kaunický Palace near the heart of Prague has over 100 exhibits of his works, including paintings, photographs, charcoal drawings, pastels, lithographs and personal memorabilia. The exhibits provide a unique view into the outlook and world of the artist and his special view of the world. Extra attention is paid to his time in Paris (1887-1904), internationally the most celebrated period of his work. A set of posters from this period is on display including the most important ones made for Sarah Bernhardt. A set of his characteristic decorative panels and a number of examples from Documents Décoratifs (1902) give an idea of Mucha¥s conception of Art Nouveau. Pages from his Parisian sketchbooks can also be seen, as well as works which he created after his return to Czechoslovakia (1910-1939). Guided tours are available, but need to be booked 3-4 days in advance. Guides are available in several languages: Czech, English, German, French, Spanish, and Russian. Situated right inside the Mucha Museum is a gift shop which offers an exclusive selection of gifts with Alphonse Mucha and Art Nouveau motifs. Travel agencies organizing a visit with a guided tour receive a 10% discount at the gift shop.
