National Gallery of Prague

To elevate the nation's spirit through the works of art, that has been the mission of the National Gallery of Prague since its establishment. Having gone through different stages of transition, today's Gallery finally took shape in 1949, while it was initially formed in 1796. The institution is home to numerous art works of painting, sculpture and graphic art as well as to the genre of new media, of both domestic and foreign origin. These works have been exclusively collected, recorded maintained and professionally processed by the establishment. The National Gallery houses various permanent and other exhibitions. Some of the permanent exhibition halls of the National Gallery include the Kinski Palace, Sternberg Palace, Great Exhibition Palace, St. George's Convent, Convent of St. Agnes of Bohemia and Zbraslav Castle. The Gallery maintains a Publishing House as well as a Library. The Library of National Gallery houses approximately 100,000 publications on fine arts including graphics, sculpture, architecture, art history, history and social science and is open to public from Tuesday to Friday. It includes Czech and foreign periodicals and catalogues of Czech and international artist exhibitions and auctions. It also organises foreign language tours of the National Gallery permanent exhibitions. All the expositions remain closed on Mondays. The National Gallery celebrated its 210 years of existence in 2006.
