This is the Castle on the heights. It is the mythological birthplace of Prague. The main entrance to it is through Tabor Gate. Settlement did begin here between 972 and 999. Actual serious construction, however, dates from a much later period of time. Charles IV dismantled the foundations of several small palaces to construct the bastion in 1655. What remains, today are vestiges.
The 17th century Gothic Peak Gate is elegant in its design. There are the foundations of the Romanesque Basilica of St. Lawrence. The Gardens of the Citadel feature statues by Josef Myselberk of Czech legends. These include, in the northwest corner, Libuše and Přemysl, and, in the southeast corner, Šárka and Ctrad. The ruined guard towers bear the name of Libuše’s Bath, a former defence bastion. The Vyšehrad Gallery is in a bastion. It is home to many temporary exhibits throughout the year. After visiting the Gallery, you can also wander through the nearby park and see the open-air theatre
