Gorj Details

Gorj is a judet (county) in the province of Oltenia in Romania. Traditionally, it is part of Wallachia, the former principality that was ruled by Prince Vlad Tepes, known as The Impaler. He was the model for Bram Stokers greatest literary creation, Count Dracula. The main urban center in Gorj is the city of Targu Jiu, with a population of about 98,000. Targu Jiu is an industrial town that dates back to the 15th century. During World War II there was a concentration camp here for Romanian Jews. Today people come to discount hotels in Gorjs main city to see the world famous Brancusi Sculptures.Constantin Brancusi (1876 1957) lived in Targu Jiu as a boy. In 1937 he was commissioned to create a memorial to the Romanian heroes of the Great War (WWI). He completed four major works: The Table of Silence, The Gate of the Kiss, Chairs Alley, and The Endless Column. These works are now the main tourist attraction in Targu Jiu. However you can also visit the Art Museum and the Gorj County Museum. There is a statue of Brancusi in front of the Elvira Godeanu Drama Theater.
