Central Russia is the most populated region and the home to Russia's mega-city and capital Moscow. It is also the country's most popular tourist destination. The region is named thus for its status as the political and economic center of Russia and not for being in the center of the Russian land mass as one might presume for it is actually located in the country's extreme west. Central Russia is one of the seven federal districts that make up the Russia of today and it has many cities and towns filled with sites all well worth seeing. Central Russia has much to offer the traveler. Just to mention a few, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts which displays an impressive collection of art from all the past eras, the Tretyakov Gallery, the Novodevichy Monastery, the Kremlin which is a magnificent walled structure and dates back to 1145, the historically famous Red Square that originally was a marketplace. Lets not forget what possibly might be the most recognized of Russian images, the St. Basil's Cathedral with its famous domed roofs. Central Russia is a well developed region and has it all, the old and the modern.
