Moscow is one of the world’s great cities. Founded in 1156 as a small Kremlin (fortress), it has grown into a metropolis. Whether you go for a vacation or a weekend, Moscow will have something for you in the way of history, fine cuisine, sports, culture and an exciting nightlife. Visitors will want to see the Kremlin and Red Square, but there is much more to Moscow. The city has many museums. Among the best are the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts which houses artifacts from ancient Greece, Egypt and Rome; the Tolstoy House, the winter home of the great writer; the Lenin Mausoleum which contains the embalmed body of Vladimir Lenin, the first Soviet leader; and the State Armoury, a 17th century building with an amazing display of gold and silver artifacts and royal jewelry. Churches visitors will want to see include the 14th century Cathedral of the Assumption which has the throne of Ivan the terrible and the 16th century Cathedral of the Archangel, the burial place of czars.
