For visitors to Russia who appreciate music and would like to learn a little more about how Russian musicians are trained (or even receive a bit of training themselves!), there is the Gnessin State Musical College. The college was established in 1895 by two sisters, Helena and Maria Gnessis who were themselves graduates from the Moscow Conservatory of Music, where they achieved high honors in their studies. The college met with almost immediate success, and has only improved over time, to the point where it is now considered one of the most elite musical schools in the country, somewhat akin to the United State’s Juilliard.
Many prominent Russian musicians have graduated from this school including Roberto Cani, Boris Elkis, Sasha Ivanov, Lev Knipper, Oleg Maisenberg, and Anatoly Sheludyakov. The school operates with a small staff including some American musicians and specializes in the traditional classical instruments of violin and piano.
