Even visitors who have seen most of the other grand sights that Russia has to offer are frequently amazed by the scope and grandeur of Saint Isaac’s Cathedral in Saint Petersburg. It remains the largest of the city’s many cathedrals, and for quite some time even qualified as the largest cathedral in the entire country. The exterior of the cathedral looks quite imposing and intimidating, being made of primarily of sharp, right angles and straight lines, with several massive columns and a domed spire. It is frequently said to be one of the world’s greatest examples of surviving neoclassical design. The interior of the cathedral, however, is of even greater interest to lovers of the fine arts. There’s hardly anywhere you can go inside the massive structure without seeing at least one remarkably detailed painting or relief carving, depicting some aspect of Russia’s extensive history and unique mythology.
