One of the most famous writers in the history of Russian literature, Nikolai Gogol is well known for his stories such as “The Nose” and “The Overcoat” which depicted for the first time the plight of the poor and downtrodden in a new voice that would for a time be called “Social Realism” and prove highly influential in forming the outlooks of other notable writers who would come later such as the masters Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. It is appropriate then, that a statue commemorating the legendary artist has been erected very near to Nevsky Prospect where so many of his works are set.

The statue is a work of bronze that ranks among the nicest sculptures to be seen in all of Russia, and thus should be of great interest to any Russia tourist who wants to see more of the country’s artistic tradition. The sculpture depicts Gogol in the middle of walking, clutching a plain garment tight about himself and looking withdrawn and pessimistic. While it might be somewhat discomforting to look at, it is also, like the man who inspired it, very truthful.
