Saint Petersburg’s answer to Moscow’s famous Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, formerly known as the Russian Museum of His Imperial Majesty Alexander III, offers a collection on par with its competition. Visitors who are in the area and looking to find out more about Russia’s famous artistic tradition should definitely look into the many wonderful sights that the State Russian Museum has to offer.
Originally, the Museum housed only “hand me down” works from the Hermitage Museum and other institutions throughout the country, but in recent years, it’s seen the addition of quite a few private collections acquired both through voluntary donation and nationalization (and in that sense, the museum provides a somber history lesson as well). Those who visit the Museum also have the opportunity to see nearby attractions such as the Summer House of Peter I, the Marble Palace, and St. Michael’s Castle, as well as the Nevsky Prospect.
