What you need to know before traveling to Saint Lucia

If you want to see towering mountains, lush green valleys and thick rain forest, this Caribbean Island is the most mountainous island in the region. The twin peaks, the Pitons, look down on high along the West Coast. Saint Lucia also justly wears the title 'The Helen of the West Indies'. In Castries, you can see Spanish-style architecture. This is particularly obvious in the overall design of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. You should check out the Castries Market. It is highly visible with its brilliant orange roof. Consider heading to the government buildings in the fortification of Fort Charlotte (1764-1784). Go to Diamond Botanical Gardens and Waterfall. Here are massive amounts of flowering bushes, blossoming plants and enormous trees. Follow along clearly marked trails to the natural gorge and the Diamond Waterfall. Take a side trip to the Fond Doux Estate, one of the first French estates on the island. It is still a working plantation. Be adventurous and ride a Creole Horse. This species is indigenous to the island. To top off your visit, head to the only known drive-through volcano – La Soufrière. Alternatively, go to Pigeon Island National Park and Rodney Bay. Here, you can dive and fish.
