The ancient history of the town of Koper in Slovenia includes a period when it was actually an island called Goat’s Island by the Romans. Although the walls which once fortified the town have long since been razed to fill the sea between the island and the mainland, the main entrance gate still stands. Today the town provides the only port in Slovenia with cargo terminals for the movement of goods.
Overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, many Koper hotels offer their own restaurants specializing in locally caught fish and fresh produce from the Karst region. They provide a good home base for exploring the area’s rich historical architecture, including the 15th century Praetor’s Palace, a Gothic-Renaissance cathedral with baroque interior, the Carpaccio House, the Ethnographic Museum and archaeological collection housed in the old Tocco Palace, and Garvivi Castle. Staff at any of the hotels in Koper are always happy to provide tourists with directions and suggestions.
