If you care to cross the Ljubljanic River, leave your Ljubljana hotels behind and head to the Shoemakers’ or Cobblers’ Bridge. This charming pedestrian crossway is a relic of the medieval city. Originally of wooden construction, the bridge earned its name from the occupants of the small huts set along its length. These shoemakers resided along the bridge until times changed. The bridge eventually gave way to an iron structure in 1867.This, in turn, was replaced.

The new concrete structure is a product of the 1930s. It is the creation of the local architect Jože Plečnik. You can see several of his projects throughout the city. In fact, if you step out of many of the hotels in Ljubljana, you can see his work. They include the churches of St. Florian and St. Michael.
