The Trnovo Church is not the original on this spot. Like so many other buildings, it was rebuilt according to the style of the period. Like other churches and structures in the city, it was damaged by the 1895 earthquake. The 1735 structure gave way to a neo-historical building in 1855 then was adapted to a neo-Romanesque style by the architect Raimund Jeblinger. If you decide to leave your hotels in Ljubljana to view this religious building, be sure to go inside it. You can view the remains of the earlier churches, including a wooden statue by F. Krajli and an 1864 pipe organ. The organ is the work of Goršič from Krakovo. In the presbytery, you will see several frescoes by Matej Sternen. The altar paintings are the work of Pavel Künl. As is the case with much of the architecture in the city, maybe even some of the Ljubljana hotels, this church flirted with the architect Jože Plečnik. In this case, the Lamp of the Eternal Light is from his design.
