Maribor is in eastern Slovenia, and is considered the Balkan nation’s second city. What Maribor lacks in world-famous sites, it more than makes up for in charm. This is largely due to the community’s Old Town. Its central streets are pedestrianized and are full of cafes. In June and July the Lent district along the Drava River holds an art festival. Guests staying in Maribor hotels can easily tour the Old Town on foot and see the Castle Museum. Whether you are here for a vacation or a weekend, Maribor Castle is a must-see. The castle dates to the 15th century, but has a magnificent 18th century rococo staircase. Visitors will also want to see the Maribor Cathedral and the 15th century synagogue in the old Jewish section. One unique attraction is the Old Vine. This is the world’s oldest living grapevine. It is strung along a riverside house, and has been contributing to the local winery for over 400 years.
