Spodnjeposavska is one of the smallest of Slovenia’s 12 regions and is located in the southeast of the country. Bordered by Croatia, this region abounds in ancient castles. One of Spodnjeposavska’s castles is the Brežice Castle which is located near the Sava River. Originally built in the 12th century the castle was destroyed in 1515 during a peasant revolt and rebuilt in 1530. This castle has one of Slovenia’s biggest ceremonial halls, which is decorated in baroque fresco paintings which feature Roman and Greek mythological figures. Another castle which is worthwhile visiting is the Kostanjevica Castle. This castle has a museum and a 12th century chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary. There are also medieval castles in the towns of Sevnica, Brestanica and Krško.
