The small, attractive town of Betanzos is in the province of A Coruna in the Galicia region of Spain. It is a medieval town that straddles the Mendo and Mandeo Rivers. At one time it was the principal river port for the region. Tourists come to discount hotels in Betanzos so they can tour its well preserved Old Town. A great experience is to stroll along the riverbank and then enjoy a glass of wine in one of the many quaint taverns.

The town’s main square is Praza dos Irmans Garcia Naveira. The surrounding houses are glassed in by classic gallerias. If you plan on being here on August 16, be sure to book your budget hotel room in Betanzos in advance. On midnight of that date, some 50,000 people cram into the town square for the Fiesta de San Roque. The highlight is the release of a giant, paper hot air balloon from the tower of Santo Domingo Church. In the 16th century Santo Domingo Convent you will find the Museo das Marinas. Exhibits like traditional costumes give you a look into old time Galician life. Interesting buildings on the Praza da Constitution include the Neo-Classical Casa do Concello and the Romanesque/Gothic Igrexa de Santiago. Also of interest are the Gothic churches San Francisco and Santa Maria do Azougue. The beautiful Parque O Pasatempo is full of fountains and sculpture.
