A great place to visit for a vacation or a weekend, Alicante is famous for its beautiful skies, so flying in to Alicante airport should be easy. The ancient Greeks called this place Akra Leuka (White Summit) and the Romans called it Lucentum (City of Light). This lovely coastal city in southeastern Spain is 82 kilometers northeast of Murcia and 183 kilometers south of Valencia. On a peak overlooking the city is the Castillo de Santa Barbara, which dates back to the 9th century, though most of it was built during the 16th century. It is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe. Visitors can also enjoy the gorgeous Playa de San Juan or Playa del Postiguet. They can also take a stroll along the city’s famous, palm-lined Explanada.
There are several points of interest in Alicante’s Old Town. The Concathedral of San Nicolas de Bari, which was built between 1616 and 1662 is dominated by a dome almost 150 feet (45 meters) high. The Museo de Bellas Artes Gravina, housed in a palace, has art collections dating back to the 16th century. The Iglesia de Santa Maria is Alicante’s oldest church, built between the 14th and 16th centuries on the site of a mosque. The 18th century ayuntamiento (town hall) is a beautiful example of baroque architecture, and the building’s Blue Room is worth seeing.
