Almansa is a town of 25,272 inhabitants in the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha. It is located on the easternmost border of Castile-La Mancha. Almansa is bordered in many places by the autonomous community of Valencia. There's evidence of prehistoric settlements in Almansa, but the town's rich history really begins during the Medieval period. By the 13th century, during the wars between Christians and Moors over the Iberian peninsula, the town was already of great importance. Formally or informally, the town was part of the Christian kingdom of Murcia since 1244. It was finally annexed by monarchy of Castile in 1476.
The most famous sight in Almansa is the Castle of Almansa, a massive medieval structure standing atop a huge slab of rock, known as el Cerro del Aguila, in the center of town. Other important monuments include the Palace of the Counts of Cirat, and the Church of the Assumption, whose construction took place between the 16th and 19th centuries.
