Ávila, or Ávila de los Caballeros is a city of 53,272. It is the capital of the province of Ávila, in the region of Castile-León in Spain. From far outside its medieval walls, the city looks like a stark mirage--a collection of stern, walled-in stone buildings on top of a rocky mesa, in the middle of a desert wilderness empty save for some gray rocks and brown earth. The image of the city evokes the title of a book by by its most famous resident, the sixteenth century mystic St. Teresa of Ávila: The Interior Castle.Ávila's famous attractions include its medieval walls, with many of the original towers still standing, and the gothic Cathedral of Ávila, which melds with the city's walls and looks like a true fortress of the lord. Another attraction is the old Monastery of Santo Tomas.
