El Barco de Avila is a Spanish village, located in the autonomous community of Castile-Leon. It boasts approximately 2,500 permanent residents as of 2004. The village is nestled among the Sierra de Gredos mountains. Its name means "The Boat of Avila," supposedly because of a boat that use to pass through the nearby Tormes River. Throughout most of Spain's history, this village and the surrounding land used to belong to the Duke of Alba. The village was granted its rights in the 1200's by king Alfonso VII. Farming has historically been the main occupation here. Nowadays, a number of historical structures attract tourists to the hotels in Barco de Avila.

Some points of interest in the village are the Casa del Reloj, an ancient town hall that now hosts the Tourism Office, as well as the Church of the Assumption, and the Hermitage of Santisimo Cristo del Cano. Barco de Avila hotels have lots of information about the many local traditions surrounding these attractions.
