Badajoz, Spain is a sizable city of 145,257 inhabitants, located near the border of Spain and Portugal, in the region of Extremadura. Founded by Moors in the 9th century AD, the city has served as military fort and a center of trade, in particular with Portugal. During the Napoleonic Wars, the city was the site of a long siege. After a considerable expenditure of time and manpower, the British succeeded in taking the city from the French. The British still celebrate the anniversary of the end of the siege every April 6.

The big attractions of Badajoz have to do with its military history. The ruins of the original Moorish castle is one big draw.
