Calamonte Hotels and Accommodation

Calamonte is a small town in the province of Badajoz, which is in the Extremadura region of Spain. This region has been called “The land of the Conquistadors” because so many of the Spanish adventurers who went off to seek their fortunes in the New World came from here. It is also a land of bullfighters. Calamonte is known for its Bullfight Festival. However, for most of the visitors who stay in comfortable budget hotels in Calamonte, this town of just over 6,000 people near the Portuguese border is a place from which to enjoy the hills and wide plains of the countryside, and explore nearby communities. This was once one of Spain’s poorest regions, but communities like Calamonte are rapidly becoming popular tourist destinations.
In the nearby city of Badajoz, the provincial capital, visitors can tour the Alcazaba, an 11th century Arabic fortress. Situated on a hill, this fortification was the scene of many battles. Gateways, turrets and stretches of walls still stand. The ruins include mosques and churches. Inside the former Palace of the Dukes of la Roca an archaeology museum displays thousands of artifacts dating back to pre-Roman times. The recently restored 13th century Catedral de San Juan has a Gothic interior and a Churrigueresque altarpiece.
