Merida is the capital of the Spanish region of Exteremadura. It is a medium-sized town, with a population of about 75,000 permanent residents. The city was founded by the Romans during their conquest of Spain, and served an important function during Roman times: it guarded one of the only crossings of the Guadiana River.
