Olivenza Hotels and Accommodation
Olivenza is a fascinating town of about 11,800 inhabitants and ambiguous national affiliation. It is situated along the boundary between Portugal and Spain, and its control is a point of some contention between the two Iberian countries. Currently, the town belongs to Spain, as part of the autonomous community of Extremadura. However, its real affiliation has been disputed since 1801, when Spain took over the formerly Portuguese town as part of the Treaty of Badajoz. Olivenza hotels have either a Spanish or Portuguese appearance, depending on when they were built and on the sympathies of their owners.
Standing along the eastern shore of the Guadiana River, the historic fortresses town contains a unique mix of both Spanish and Portuguese culture. One of the most beloved sights in Olivenza is the Castle of Olivenza, with its sturdy rectangular towers and beautiful attached church. The Church of St. Mary Magdalene--a characteristically Portuguese ecclesiastic building--is another important local attraction, as is the Monastery of Juan de Dios.
