Ciutadella de Menorca, or "Ciutadella" for short, is a picturesque old city in the west of the island of Minorca, one of the Spanish-controlled Balearic Islands. Minorca stands in the warm Mediterranean Sea, just off the coast of Catalonia, and Ciutadella de Menorca used to be the capital of Minorca due to its venerable historical status. The town was established in the days of Carthage, and became a commercial powerhouse in the Middle Ages. In the 17th century, the town became a cultural center as well as a commercial one, when many beautiful Italian Baroque buildings were constructed there. Attractions in Ciutadella include the Ciutadella Town Hall, once an Arabic gubernatorial palace, the stout old tower of the Castell de Sant Nicolau, and the massive Cathedral of Ciutadella de Menorca.
