"Sort of a great location but no windows, otherwise clean and comfortable."
This 4-star hotel is definitely in an overall great location, the famous "Las Ramblas". It is close to the waterfront, close to Paseo de Gracia (main commercial area) and next to the gothic quarter - all within a 5-10 minute walk. There are plenty of good tapas bars, and Plaza Real is minutes away where you can find great nightlife too. The hotel is modern and clean, and the amenities available are good. The staff is also very friendly and helpful. However, beware, since the specific location of the hotel is not great. The hotel is on Sant Pau street, an alley street off of one of the main Ramblas. Speaking to many of the locals, they mentioned that "Las Ramblas" is a commercial area, but at night becomes one of the more dangerous areas in the city, especially the streets off of the main Ramblas (in other words, the tiny alleys where the hotel is located). During the day and afternoon we felt safe, but at night, especially coming back from a late dinner, we didn't really feel safe at all walking to the hotel. We ended up spending money on cabs a few times because walking was not a smart idea. The rooms were on the smaller side but clean. Since most of the time you won't be in the room, the size was not a problem. However, most of the rooms have no windows. They have a wall with large square lightning that is sort of a fake window, but it gets frustrating not being able to see outside. The only windows you can find are looking into the hotel hallways or to tiny yards surrounded by tall walls. Looking at the hotel building, it shares walls with buildings on both sides and the back, so there are really no real windows in any rooms except the ones on the front face, and those look into the alley. The bar was nice but the food is way too expensive for the quality. You can find an open tapas bar within 5-10 minutes that would serve much better food for 1/2 the price. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The hotel price was reasonable, but they charge for in-room wifi, local phone use and a few of the TV channels. Overall, we liked the feel of the hotel but not the location or the window-less rooms (it becomes a problem in the morning when it will be dark unless you turn the wall lighting on). We ended up cutting our stay short and moving to a better 4-star hotel in the L'eixample neighborhood. We are probably not going to stay at Hotel España again. Staying in a hotel on Paseo de Gracia, L'eixapmle or the water front would be a better choice.

"Nice Hotel"
We liked the hotel and location. We did not receive the wake up call that we requested. Luckily we woke up and did not miss our flight.

Pros: Location is perfect and the hotel is very pretty after the renovations they made. the room was very clean ad the decor is pretty modern. also nice of them to give bottles of water for free.
Cons: The heating was broken, so we had to be with 22 degrees the all time. even though they informed that it would be fixed 2 days later, it did not happen. also, the hotel is still under renovation, so at 08h in the morning the noise was unbearable, which is pretty terrible for people who are on hollidays. the door of the room could not be locked at all. the room was not very big and also the minibar was not working, so all the drinks were pretty warm...
"The location of the hotel was too good,in the center of the city"
Pros: The location of the hotel was too good,in the center of the city.
Cons: Hotel was under construction , thus it was pretty noisy.additionally in the first room we stayed in the roof started dripping water and even though the problem was supposed to have been fixed , it wasn't so we finally changed room.
