An old factory once stood on the site of what is now La Maquinista. After the refurbishment of the city for the 1992 Olympic Games, the architects began to design a modern event center, tearing down the old eyesore and constructing a beautiful, modern place for the artistic film makers of the city to display their talents. The result was a huge cinema complex along with cafes and shopping.

The plaza outside is small, much like a terrace, because other than the open air shopping, the action is inside. The open air shopping mall, Cineplex, and event center was inaugurated on June 15, 2000 and is located in the central commercial district near the main street of Cataluna, between the water and the commercial district, out of the way of most of the tourist attractions in the city, but still accessible from local taxis. Along with literally hundreds of shops and restaurants, La Manquinista's Cineplex consists of 14 auditoriums, so you can spend the hottest part of the day watching just about any movie you can imagine. The complex also sponsors the local film festivals and when it's their turn, the international film festival.
