Despite being such a rich tourist spot, Barceloneta is also a place where you can meet and eat with the real locals. Barceloneta, or ‘Little Barcelona’, is the old fisherman's area of the city and is where you’ll find some of the city’s finest fish restaurants. Remember – if the locals are eating here that’s the best recommendation you can get.
If you wander inland a little from the city’s sea front, you’ll discover a charming side to Barceloneta. Set away from the bustle of the city, this quiet part of town hasn't changed much. Washer women still hang their laundry from the lines, men play board games and swap stories, and life moves at a slower pace. This is also where you can eat what the locals eat, drink what the locals drink, and maybe hear a story or two about how things used to be. The beach itself is a great place to relax almost all year round. Besides sunbathing opportunities aplenty, there are watersports such as windsurfing available here, and of course you can splash around amidst the tourists and the local.
