      Gothic Quarter Details

Once called the Cathedral Quarter, Barcelonas Gothic Quarter is home the palaces, temples and walls first built by the Romans. This is the oldest section of the Catalan capital and is where you can find ancient Roman ruins along with well preserved medieval structures. The Gothic Quarter is also home to impressive religious structures such as Santa Maria del Mar, Catedral La Seu and Santa Maria del Pi.

It takes approximately 3 hours to walk the Gothic Quarter during the afternoon. In the evening may take a little longer, as this area is also the home to some of the best bars and nightlife that Barcelona has to offer. If you begin a walking tour at Placa Nova, youll first see Portal del Bisbe. This ancient Roman wall has two large towers on either side and is a good point of reference. A little further along is the Palace Episcopal, or Bishop's Palace, which was constructed at the end of the 12th century. Beyond this are two cathedrals and gothic fountains; you are now entering an even older part of the city, with some buildings dating back to the 1300's.
