Mataro is a medium-sized city, with over 100,000 inhabitants, located in the northeastern Spanish autonomous community of Catalonia, on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea. Mataro is close to the cosmopolitan metropolis of Barcelona. The town has its origins in Roman times, as evince by the remains of a 2000-year-old bath house--which tourists can examine--within the city limits. Agriculture and viticulture have been Mataro's traditional occupation until the 19th century, when a plague of insects ruined the vineyards. Agriculture has recovered slowly, and has been supplanted by the industry and service sectors over time.
