This seaside town near Barcelona in the Catalonian region of Spain has nine beautiful beaches and many lively bars and restaurants. It is known to be popular with the gay community, but many other people from Barcelona and beyond come here for a vacation or just a weekend. Sitges is a jet-set destination, but the old part of town is still a charming place to explore, and everyone enjoys a stroll down the main boulevard, the Passeig Maritim. An art museum, the Museu Cau Ferrat, has in its collection many pieces by the Modernista artist Santiago Rusinal, who like to spend time here. The museum also has two El Grecos, as well as some beautiful work done in wrought iron.
On the hill overlooking the town is the seventeenth century church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla. From here there is a splendid view of the coastline and the sea. Not too much farther down the highway is Santa Maria de Poblet. Here visitors can see a magnificent Cisterian monastery that dates back to the twelfth century. This building is considered one of the masterpieces of Spanish monastic architecture.
