Playa Blanca is a resort at the southern end of the island of Lanzarote, the easternmost of Spain’s Canary Islands. Lanzarote has few trees and gets very little rainfall. However, many people consider Lanzarote to be the most beautiful of the Canary Islands because of the dramatic colors of its volcanic landscape. Visitors also appreciate the fact that Lanzarote has been spared the worst effects of over-development for tourism. For a relaxing vacation or weekend, Playa Blanca has all you could ask for. There are fine beaches nearby, but the best one, Playa Papagayo, is a short distance to the east. Playa Blanca was once a fishing village, and still retains the small community ambiance.
Nearby is the Parque Nacional de Timanfaya. This is a unique geological preserve where visitors can tour a haunting volcanic landscape. The prominent features are the Montanas del Fuego (Fire Mountains); volcanoes that devastated the island in the 18th century. Visitors can also go to Arrecife, the administrative center of the island. There they can see the Castillo de San Jose, and old fort that is now an art museum. The can also visit la Casa de los Arroyo, a historic house that now houses a library.
