Ponferrada Hotels and Accommodation
This city in northwestern Spain was named for the iron bridge constructed in the twelfth century for the use of pilgrims. This community was an important base for the Order of the Knights Templar, now well known because of the book The Da Vinci Code. Their fortress here, Castillo de los Templarios, (Templars’ Castle) was one of the largest fortifications in this part of Spain. It was constructed between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries. From its mighty walls the Knights Templar patrolled the roads to protect pilgrims from bandits. This is a must-see, whether you’re in the area for a vacation or just a weekend. Ponferrada also has a small but interesting Old Quarter. Here you can see the Baroque town hall with its clock tower. Here visitors can also see the Basilica de la Virgen de la Encina, built during the Renaissance, and the older Iglesia de Santo Thomas de las Ollas, which has a tenth century apse and features Romanesque, Mozarabic and Baroque elements.
