Ben Retiro Park is an extremely popular park, and contains some lovely sculptures and buildings. There is a cool peaceful lake in the park, and sitting there makes it hard to believe that you are surrounded by the city when you are in the park.
The park was built for King Philip IV, but was abandoned after his death. It was restored on several occasions, and eventually opened to the public. The park contains probably the last Renaissance work in Spain, and still contains some of the original buildings that were there when it was first formed. Many sculptures have been erected over the years, meaning that it is now like walking around an open air sculpture museum.
