This church is best known for its massive cupola, which is the third largest on a Christian church anywhere in the world. The dome itself is a huge 33 meters in diameter, and is easily seen throughout most of the western part of Madrid. Since it is located close to shopping, dining, entertainment and cultural activities, this is a terrific central location to plan to stay.
King Charles III originally constructed the Church of Saint Francis The Great in the 18th century, as a tribute to Saint Francis of Assisi. It is believed that the location is the original spot of a Franciscan monastery founded by St. Francis. Although several architects designed this neo-classical church, Sabatini is often credited with this beautiful landmark. Fully restored, the church is now home to beautiful artwork, and it is a true monument to the original design and décor.
