The fountain is the centrepiece in the middle of the Plaza de Cibeles, and has become one of the most prominent features of Madrid, being often used as a symbol for the city. The Mayor’s office provides a lovely backdrop for the fountain, especially good for tourists’ photographs.
There is a sculpture in the centre of the fountain of a goddess riding in a chariot, being pulled by lions. The fountain is the place chosen by the football team Real Madrid to visit whenever they are celebrating their victories. It was designed in the late 1700's and built during the reign of King Carlos III.
