What is so interesting about the history of the Gate of Toledo is the reason why it was built. It was started as a commemoration of the 1812 constitution, and when the build was started, a chest was placed inside with coins and items related to this. But they ran out of money, and so the project was abandoned until 1817.
By then, the constitution has been abandoned - so the coins were replaced with those depicting the current King. However, construction of the mighty gate was so slow that it wasn't until 1823 that it was finished, and by then the thinking had again changed towards liberalism and the contents were changed to reflect that. The gate was eventually finished in 1827.
