La Almudena Cemetery Details

La Almudena Cemetery in Madrid is the largest out of all the cemeteries in the country, and is also one of the biggest cemeteries in Western Europe. This cemetery has been in existence probably since 1884, as records show that this is the earliest date engraved on any of the grave markers. This was the main cemetery for the entire city of Madrid from 1884 until 1973. La Almudena Cemetery was the only cemetery for most of Madrids citizens from the 1920's on. Estimations reveal that about 5 million people are buried here. You will have no worries if just walking through a cemetery is something you like to do. No one will bother you, as there is proper surveillance in place to keep down trouble. The cemetery does close at 6 PM, so it is best to get an early start if viewing the many graves of famous people that are here.
