It is a lovely square, which has buildings with lots of balconies all facing into the square. It was built in the Habsburg period, and the buildings all have lovely painted façades so it really is a pretty place to visit and admire the architecture.
There are also many events that take place in the square, such as bullfights, markets and soccer games – and there have even been public executions there over the years. It is now used for celebrations of the patron Saint of Madrid. There are many shops and restaurants there, which all add to the lovely atmosphere and make it a place which it is worth spending some time at.
