Leire is a monastery in the northern Spanish autonomous community of Navarre. Mentioned in historical documents since the 9th century, Leire (or "Leyre") is one of the most historically significant monasteries in all of Spain. The structure is situated in the town of Yesa, 52 kilometers away from Navarre's capital of Pamplona. It stands on a natural "balcony" of rock, at the southern flank of the Sierra de Errando mountain range. Overlooking the valley of the river Aragon, the ancient monastery is majestic both in its aspect and in its historical role.

The monastery of Leire stands along the famous Way of Santiago, which in the Middle Ages was thronged with pilgrims voyaging to the holy site of Santiago de Compostela. The pilgrims saw in the monastery of Leire, hotels in which to rest during their travels. Tourist--the modern pilgrims--can find hotels in Leire as well, especially via sites like EasyToBook.com. As for attractions in Leire: the entire monastery is an attraction, but take particular care to see the monastery church's Porta Specioasa gates, the spooky 11th century crypt, and the handsome monastery tower, with its squarish windows.
